What is 14 meridians

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the 14 meridians form the foundation of the body’s energy network.

The 14 meridians are divided into 12 primary meridians and 2 extraordinary meridians:

The 12 Primary Meridians

These meridians correspond to the body’s major organs and organ systems. Each meridian has a specific pathway and function:

Liver Meridian – Manages emotions and ensures smooth energy flow.

Lung Meridian – Governs respiration and immune defense.

Large Intestine Meridian – Regulates digestion and waste elimination.

Stomach Meridian – Controls digestion and nourishment.

Spleen Meridian – Supports digestion and blood production.

Heart Meridian – Governs circulation and emotional well-being.

Small Intestine Meridian – Manages nutrient absorption.

Bladder Meridian – Eliminates toxins and supports urinary health.

Kidney Meridian – Stores vital energy and governs growth and reproduction.

Pericardium Meridian – Protects the heart and aids emotional balance.

Triple Burner Meridian – Coordinates water metabolism and energy distribution.

Gallbladder Meridian – Aids decision-making and detoxification.

The 2 Extraordinary Meridians

These meridians do not correspond to specific organs but serve as reservoirs for Qi and blood:

Conception Vessel (Ren Mai) – Regulates Yin energy and reproductive health.

Governing Vessel (Du Mai) – Controls Yang energy and spinal health.

How Do the 14 Meridians Work?

Each meridian follows a distinct pathway on the body, connecting internal organs to the surface. This interconnectedness allows TCM practitioners to identify imbalances by observing external signs, such as changes in skin, pulse, or symptoms. Acupoints along these meridians can be stimulated through acupuncture, acupressure, or herbal treatments to restore energy flow.
